DONATIONS FOR PROJECTS IN AMERICA AND AUROVILLE

Matagiri wants to be a link between the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and Auroville and the United States. For over thirty years we have served this vision. We need your support to help build a strong center. If you want to help, start here. We are currently creating a "Maintenance Fund" to sustain our current infrastructure and make our facilities functional and beautiful. Please read a beautiful letter from Anu Ahluwalia describing this effort

A number of other very worthy projects need your support. This is not a complete list, but might give some indication of the scope of our work. You can write one check and allocate portions to any of the projects listed below. We are a 501 c 3 nonprofit organization and will acknowledge your donation by letter. A small percentage of all donations are kept to support our infrastructure.

Checks should be made payable to:
Matagiri Sri Aurobindo Center
or MSAC and mailed to:

Matagiri
1218 Wittenberg Road
Mount Tremper NY 12457

You can also give online via secure credit card

Clicking on this link will take you directly to the donation page.

You can give anonymously, you can specify a particular project or give in memory of someone. You can print a receipt for your tax records directly from your browser. Matagiri will acknowledge all donations as well (though obviously not the anonymous ones).

Work on the Land

Many people visiting Matagiri have a sense of delight when walking up the
driveway, The “atmosphere” of the land is both calming and uplifting.
Our center’s entrance has a new sign and the landscaping around the house
offers year ‘round beauty. But since our founding, the pine forest has been
growing at the entrance to the property and has not been managed. A number
of these large trees have fallen down in high winds and some have simply
leaned against other trees half fallen.
Many of the saplings near the garden now create shade where we want sunlight
for our fruit trees and vegetables. Last year Narad, who tends both the
Service Tree in the Ashram and the Banyan Tree in Auroville, helped us take
many of these out on a work day, but some of the taller ones need to be
professionally removed.
At our beautiful outlook where we hold our August Darshan, saplings are
growing back up into the “view”. We would like to expand the lookout
slightly and take down the minimum number of trees there.
Most importantly, the entrance / exit needs landscaping to give a safer
awareness of oncoming traffic and to welcome visitors with beauty.
All of this major landscaping requires a professional crew. We’re fortunate
that we have some excellent tree surgeons who can come in and clean up our
woods.
Because we’ve had roof, gutter and window repairs on the main house and
cabin our maintenance budget is finished for the year.
Please consider a donation to help us maintain the beauty, functionality and
safety of our property. Our goal is $20,000 to make our land safe and
beautiful and not many days are left until the winter snows. Please be as
generous as possible.

THE MICKEY FUND

Eugene "Mickey" Finn experienced a miracle. He changed from being a heroin addict and thief into a yogi who, while driving a cab, sent $200 a month to Auroville. He started a center in Boston dedicated to Sri Aurobindo's vision and taught free of charge out of his small apartment in Boston's Fenway section for thirty years. We ask you to join in creating a fund to honor his life and memory. For every dollar given, the Foundation for World Education will match twenty percent and manage the money, dividing the proceeds equally between Matagiri, the Sri Aurobindo Center of Boston and Auroville.

NEW JERSEY FUND

A number of those devoted to the vision of Sri Aurobindo and Mother are coming together to form a permanent center in New Jersey. It is just starting to germinate and could use some watering. For more information go to Sri Aurobindo Foundation of North America.

PAVILION OF TIBETAN CULTURE

Claude Arpi is working to manifest the first building in the cultural zone after Bharat Nivas, the Indian Pavilion, and to train masons from Tibet in mudbrick architecture in the process. Since 1973, when H.H. the Dalai Lama visited with Mother and toured Auroville, there has been a strong connection with Tibet. Numerous educational and cultural programs have brought traditional dance, sand mandala and healing programs to Auroville, while Tibetans have trained in dentistry, reforestation, water-pumping windmills and other appropriate technology. With the first floor completed, the Pavilion has run short of funds. Claude spoke at Tibet House in New York City this summer about his work and is featured in their newsletter, Tibet House Drum. He hopes that people of good will can join with the Dalai Lama (who donated $3,000) in making a financial contribution to complete this model mudbrick building.

RURAL DENTAL PROJECT

Besides Land, Savitri Bhavan, Village Action and the Matrimandir are so many other worthwhile projects that have very practical grassroots effects. One is the training of local youth in basic dentistry for the benefit of the Tamil villages. Anyone with a bad tooth or gum disease can imagine what needless suffering goes on in rural India.

AUROVILLE GENERAL FUND

Auroville is such a multifaceted project, there is likely to be some particular aspect which could inspire support. But it is the donation without an earmark which can support the infrastructure which allows you to know about all the rest. These are bright dedicated people. They know their priorities. Consider giving in support of Auroville as a whole.

SAVITRI BHAVAN

Savitri is Sri Aurobindo's epic poem, a description of his own yoga and experiences. Many find it to contain great mantric power. The Bhavan is being built in Auroville as a center for a deep exploration of Savitri including art and music. The entire project, including library, classrooms and exhibition hall is approximately $180,000.

VILLAGE ACTION

This is the grass roots work. Poor Tamil villages surround Auroville. Creating sources of safe water, teaching hygiene, starting health clinics, schools and cottage industries are the very practical necessities of uplifting our neighbors and helping those in the most need.

AUM SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Many people want to attend our national meeting, but can't afford the cost of travel or room and board. Consider the gift of a scholarship to promote our sense of community and understanding the vision of Sri Aurobindo and Mother.

LAND FOR AUROVILLE

This past year, we realized what a difficult predicament we were in. Auroville's success was making it a prime focus of land speculation. If the integrity of the project is to hold, key plots of land must be in Auroville's ownership. $500,000 is needed immediately, two million in the near term and ten million before we are secure.

MATRIMANDIR

The Matrimandir will be the soul of Auroville. The sooner the soul is there, the better it will be for everybody, especially the Aurovilians.

The Mother

The Matrimandir is not only the central sphere, but twelve petals, each with a meditation room and surrounded by gardens embodying a certain state of consciousness. The daily work involves a large dedicated team which deserves all the support we can muster.
